Why It Sucks

  1. The art style and character designs either don't fit the series (because the character designer is the mangaka of Death Note) or are simply awful;
    • Grant is completely unrecognizable, since he is supossed to be a pirate/bandit, but this game makes him look like some sort of mummy. Also, his weapons look like the weapon of Axel from Kingdom Hearts instead of the simple knifes that he used in the past.
    • Carmilla, while fitting for her nature, looks like a heavy metal stripper or a sadomasochist. It doesn't help that she fights with melee attacks, while in the other games of the series, she uses magic and projectiles.
    • Maria Renard looks like a stereotypical 'Magical Girl'/gothic Lolita.
    • Eric Lecarde, for some reason, was designed as a teenager, and his spear looks like it was possesed by the Soul Edge.
    • Shanoa resembles a fragile nun, far from her original design.[1]
    • The Golem resembles more a Frankenstein monster than any of the golems in the series, which are normally made out of stone, iron, or other materials.
    • Death's design is insulting and completely ridiculous.
    • Sypha is unrecognizable. She does not resemble a witch in the slightest and her breasts are comically large.[2]
    • Dracula's outfit is ridiculous.
    • Simon looks too much like a shirtless Light Yagami with a whip, which clashes heavily with his apperance in games (As a reference, his Ultimate design is way more accurate).
  2. Poor camera.
  3. Awkward controls.
  4. Extremely limited number of combos.
  5. Basic, repetitive and tedious combat.
  6. Combos themselves are unbalanced.
  7. Maria Renard's story contains sexual humor, including her commenting on Sypha and Carmilla's bust size, which doesn't fit in the Castlevania series.
  8. Only 14 playable characters, a rather low amount for a series that has many characters across multiple game.
  9. Bad sound effects and voice acting.
  10. There's many game modes, but almost all of them are the same.
  11. Extremely cheap AI, most notably when fighting Maria Renard, Dracula and Carmilla.
  12. After beating the story mode, you must beat it again to get all of the endings, which are also terrible.
  13. The roster is incredibly unbalanced.
  14. Boring gameplay modes.
  15. The true final boss (Time Reaper) is extremely cheap. His story is dumb, since he is a servant of Galamoth, who barely anyone knows since he appeared only in Castlevania Symphony of the Night as a secret boss. Finally, his design rips off of Death in Castlevania Curse of Darkness.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Awesome remixes of classic Castlevania themes.
  2. A few of the characters have cool designs, Cornell being the most notable one.
    • It should be mentioned that the game's artist was Takeshi Obata, best known for being the artist for the Death Note manga.
  3. Good graphics for Wii standards.

Reception

Castlevania Judgement was poorly received by critics and fans of the franchise alike and is widely concidered to be one of the worst Castlevania games ever made.

References

  1. They do have two defenses for this: This is set after her canon game, and the developers admitted animating her hair would have been very hard as it was before, so her change in design was to accomodate their rendering limitations.
  2. Unlike Shanoa, she's from BEFORE she met Trevor and thus she should still be in disguise like she was in Castlevania III. The huge boobs just make the original gender reveal more ridiculous in retrospect, as one wonders how she hid that figure of hers before the reveal.
